115 Völkerschlachtdenkmal in Heilbad Heiligenstadt
115 Völkerschlachtdenkmal in Heilbad Heiligenstadt
Heilbad Heiligenstadt is considered the capital of the Eichsfeld region.
Here, you’ll find one of the oldest, perhaps even the oldest, memorials for the Battle of Nations in Germany.
October 18, 1813, was the decisive day of the Battle of Leipzig.
The neo-Gothic sandstone stele also bears the date June 18, 1815, the date of the final defeat of French Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte at Waterloo.
In 1815, shortly after this final defeat and just two years after the Battle of Leipzig, the obelisk was erected.
It was a gesture of thanks from the participants of the Wars of Liberation for the end of foreign rule and their return home.
The inscription reads: “God was with us, to Him be the glory.”
The sandstone monument is located in the Heinrich-Heine Kurpark, surrounded by tall trees.
The park integrates the former city walls. A natural waterfall and many other attractions invite visitors to stroll.
Here, you will also find a bust of the namesake, Heinrich Heine, who was baptized in Heiligenstadt.
