The criteria for inclusion on the UNESCO World Heritage List are uniqueness and historical authenticity (cultural heritage), as well as integrity (natural heritage), combined with a preservation plan.
The double World Heritage site in the Mühlhausen-Bad Langensalza-Eisenach triangle is unique in Germany.
The Wartburg Castle was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1999 as „an outstanding monument of the feudal era in Central Europe.“
It is regarded as a symbol of universal significance.
The Hainich National Park and four other German beech forests were included in the UNESCO World Natural Heritage site „Primeval Beech Forests of the Carpathians and Ancient Beech Forests of Germany“ in 2011.
There are only a few natural beech forests left in the world, and these can be found in Germany.
The Hainich is the largest contiguous deciduous forest area in Germany, with 7,500 hectares designated as a national park.
The forest comes very close to what natural forests probably looked like long ago.
Many rare plant and animal species find an ideal habitat here.
Explore the „Primeval Forest in the Heart of Germany,“ for example, on the treetop walk.
Visit the Wildcat Village in Hütscheroda, the exhibition at Thiemsburg, the „Green Classrooms,“ or the unique path in German national parks that enables wheelchair users, blind, and visually impaired individuals to experience nature actively.
