112 Saalfeld City Museum at the Franciscan Monastery in Saalfeld
The Saalfeld Franciscan Monastery is one of the few almost completely preserved medieval ensembles of its kind.
It is one of the most important architectural monuments in Thuringia and houses one of the largest cultural history museums in the Free State.
The monastery was founded around 1250 by the Counts of Schwarzburg.
The architecture has largely been preserved, and particular attention should be given to the wooden roof truss of the monastery church (around 1300).
From the second building phase (1490-1500), the East and West cloisters, the monastery kitchen, and the monastery library are notable.
After the Reformation, various renovations and expansions took place.
The monastery housed several schools, a mint, and a malt house in the monastery church.
The Saalfeld Museum opened in 1904.
Today, the entire complex is used for museum purposes.
The museum spans about 2,700 m², featuring various exhibitions.
There are also interesting, guided tours, project work, and courses for groups in the museum workshop, such as „Making Coins,“ „Writing like in the Franciscan Monastery,“ and „Making Old Toys.“
Popular events include those held on International Museum Day, the „Day of Open Monuments,“ and the „Monastery Advent.“
