110 Wartha Church
110 Wartha Church
The small village of Wartha, a district of Eisenach, lies on the left bank of the Werra River.
The church boasts two superlatives: it is the oldest and the smallest half-timbered church in Thuringia.
It was presumably built in 1586.
The timber-framed structure, built in a post-and-beam construction method, stands on a foundation of 10.00 m x 5.80 m.
The church hall features single-story galleries on the north and west sides, accessible via a staircase in the entrance porch.
Behind the altar, two pointed arch windows in the Art Deco style catch the eye.
The wooden-carved crucifix dates back to the 17th century, while the octagonal baptismal font was made in 1587.
The organ, built in a neoclassical style by the Knauf company around 1846, was restored in 2000.
A wooden pillar stands in the middle of the rectangular room, supporting the ceiling beam of the flat ceiling.
The bronze bell from the 16th century was once rung manually from the gallery.
Half-timbered houses and sandstone gate entrances are typical of this region.
The small church blends harmoniously into the village landscape.
Today, it serves as an evangelical branch church.
