109 Unstrut Spring near Kefferhausen

The Unstrut Spring is clearly visible, set into a grotto at an elevation of 386 meters above sea level, and is located near Kefferhausen.

The village lies in a depression, surrounded by the gradually rising shell limestone plateau of the Upper Eichsfeld region.

The name Unstrut is derived from „un“ (mighty, unpleasant) and “strut“ (swamp).

The river was first mentioned as early as the 6th century.

After approximately 190 km, the Unstrut flows into the Saale River near Naumburg (Saxony-Anhalt).

The river is lined with historic settlements, castles, palaces, mills, parks, and vineyards.

Notable locations along its course include Mühlhausen, where Thomas Müntzer and Johann Sebastian Bach once lived, as well as the birthplace of Johann August Roebling, the designer of the Brooklyn Bridge in New York.

The Unstrut Cycle Path follows the river along its course.

Recommended excursions include a visit to the garden-rich town of Bad Langensalza, the Hainich National Park, or a journey back to the Stone Age at the Bilzingsleben archaeological site.
