105 Schlossturm Farnroda in Wutha-Farnroda
The Lords of Farnroda were first mentioned in historical records in 1260, followed by the church and village of Farnroda in 1272 and 1278, respectively.
In 1461, Burgrave Hartmann of Kirchberg acquired the lordship of Farnroda as a „Wettin fief.“
The castle, along with its manor and moated fortress, became the main residence of the “Burgraves of Kirchberg, Counts of Sayn and Wittgenstein, Lords of Farnroda…”
In 1799, the lordship of Farnroda reverted to the Duke of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach as an „expired“ fief.
Over the following years, ownership changed several times.
Bertold Anzius, the last private owner, and his family were forced to leave in the 1950s due to political circumstances.
The castle and estate were integrated into the local agricultural cooperatives (LPG).
The deteriorating castle had to be demolished, leaving only the tower of the former moated fortress, built in the 12th century, and the castle park, which today serve as a place of relaxation.
Despite their expulsion, the Anzius family maintained a connection to the village.
In 2006, the „Bertold Anzius Kindergarten“ was inaugurated, funded by the Bertold Anzius Foundation.
The municipality of Wutha-Farnroda is a co-founder and operates the kindergarten.
