104 Veste Wachsenburg/Drei Gleichen near Holzhausen

Veste Wachsenburg is part of the castle ensemble „Drei Gleichen.“

According to legend, in 1231, all three castles were struck by ball lightning and set on fire simultaneously.

However, it is more likely that one of the castles, „Burg Gleichen,“ gave the group its name.

Veste Wachsenburg is the highest of the Drei Gleichen castles, standing at 421 meters.

Its foundation stone was laid in 936, and over the centuries, it changed hands multiple times.

The castle has served as a fortress, an administrative center, a stronghold for robber knights, and even a prison.

Today, it is privately owned and offers food and lodging.

During the Thirty Years‘ War, the castle fell into disrepair.

Reconstruction began in 1651, and the 93-meter-deep well with its old treadwheel has been preserved.

A renovation in 1890 and the construction of the Hohenlohe Tower in 1905 gave the castle its current appearance.

The tower houses the St. George Chapel.

The castle museum offers a journey through history.

Located within the Geopark „Inselsberg – Drei Gleichen,“ the area features geological trails where visitors can explore nature, including the alabaster quarries near Wachsenburg.

The „Drei Gleichen“ includes models 101, 102, 103, and 104.
