101 Mühlburg/Drei Gleichen in Mühlberg
101 Mühlburg/Drei Gleichen in Mühlberg
The Mühlburg is part of the castle ensemble „Drei Gleichen.“
According to tradition, a ball lightning set all three castles on fire simultaneously one night in May 1231.
It is more likely, however, that one of the three castles, the „Burg Gleichen,“ was the namesake.
The Mühlburg was first mentioned in a deed of donation in 704, making it the oldest castle of the Drei Gleichen.
Count Meinhard III of Mühlberg (a confidant of the Thuringian Landgrave Hermann I) traveled in 1211 as a suitor for the son of the Landgrave to Hungary.
He escorted the four-year-old Elisabeth of Hungary to the Wartburg.
She later became known as „Saint Elizabeth of Thuringia.“
Today, the Mühlburg is in ruins.
Visitors can learn about the historical everyday life and the geological peculiarities of the region in the museum’s exhibits.
From the castle complex and the keep, there is a stunning view of the „Thuringian Castle Land Drei Gleichen“ and parts of the Geopark „Inselsberg – Drei Gleichen.“
Hike through attractive landscapes made up of various types of rock, discover quarries, travertine cascades, karst springs, and much more!
The „Drei Gleichen“ includes models 101, 102, 103, and 104.
