100 Wandelhalle in Eisenach
100 Wandelhalle in Eisenach
At the end of the 19th century, the city of Eisenach aimed to become a renowned spa resort.
The ideal location for this vision was found on the edge of the villa district and the Kartausgarten, with a view of the Wartburg (Model 14).
Private spa facilities were established, and a drinking and Wandelhalle (promenade hall) was to form the center of the spa activities.
The Wandelhalle was inaugurated in July 1906.
The plans were designed by the Dresden architect Johannes Bollert.
Spa guests strolled through the open building while enjoying the water from the Grand Duchess Karolina Spring (originating near Creuzburg).
Afterward, they listened to a spa concert performed in the music pavilion of the Wandelhalle and took walks through the Kartausgarten (a landscape garden with a neoclassical gardener’s house from 1825).
However, the spa’s glory did not last long, and in 1938, spa operations were discontinued.
In 2001, the „Wandelhalle Eisenach-Stiftung“ (Foundation) was founded.
With great dedication, funds were (and are still being) raised, and the Wandelhalle was renovated.
The former splendor has returned to the historic building.
Today, it is a popular and versatile event venue providing a small-scale recovery cure.
